Bible Songs - Sing the Scripture!

Jim SwansonHi, my name is Jim Swanson. A great joy of mine is to write Bible songs from Scripture verses. The music is written and combined with verses from the Bible to help people, young and old, to memorize God's Word much quicker and easier. There are now 8 albums of verses in song available under the name “Sing the Scripture.”

The purpose for these albums is not only to help people learn God's Word but also to help all of us meditate on the Scripture. I frequently have a song running through my head. When the words to the song are Scripture, it causes me to think over and over of what God has said. Those who meditate on Scripture have some wonderful promises they can claim (e.g. Psalm 1:1-3; Joshua 1:8, etc.) The verses are also used by the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin and enable us to live more like Christ, as the following testimony I received illustrates:

“I had a bad attitude toward a colleague but the words to Proverbs 28:13, 'He that covereth his sin shall not prosper,' ran over and over in my mind and convicted me of this bad attitude.”

How did these Bible songs begin?

In 1974 I began teaching grades 3 through 6 in a Christian school near Chattanooga, Tennessee. After lunch, I would grab my guitar and we would sing choruses together. It was great fun and a refreshing break from the academics of the day.

Some of the younger students were slow at learning their weekly memory verse and I pondered how I could help these youngsters learn God's Word. We had sung songs like, “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” and “I will sing of the Mercies of the Lord forever,” so I thought, “Why not compose a tune for this week's memory verse?” We started singing Ephesians 4:32, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, and Colossians 3:23. This was so successful that I began writing tunes for other verses as well. My pastor and friends were a great encouragement and the ministry expanded.

“I was one of those first students in your class. Later you led the chapels and we sang the Scripture songs each week. Now after more than 30 years, I still remember them and am teaching them to my own children. Thank you.”

I later taught the songs in school chapels, AWANA meetings, VBSs, and Christian camps. Some of these settings motivated additional songs.

“My children go to sleep listening to one of your CDs and can sing most of the songs by heart.”

My hope is that God will use these songs to be a blessing to you as the verses have blessed me.
